Sequoia and Kings Canyon are the two national parks closest to Fresno, with the main Kings Canyon entrance about an hour and 15 minutes east of town up Highway 180. They hold the largest trees on earth.
The General Grant Tree stands in Grant Grove near the Kings Canyon entrance. Sequoia's General Sherman Tree, the largest tree by volume anywhere, is farther in. Summer is peak season, and the high country holds snow into late spring.
There is a per-vehicle entrance fee good for both parks for seven days. Gas up and pack food before you enter, since services inside are limited and far apart.
