Shaver Lake sits at 5,500 feet in the Sierra National Forest, about an hour northeast of Fresno on Highway 168. The 2,177-acre lake, dammed in 1927 and run by Southern California Edison's Big Creek hydroelectric system, is the Valley's default summer escape: boating, jet skis, paddleboards, swimming beaches, and fishing for rainbow trout, kokanee, and smallmouth bass.
